Cleaning Outdoor Patio Furniture
Cleaning outdoor patio furniture is easier than most people think. It’s not that hard with the right tools and equipment. Most outdoor furniture, plastic or aluminum can be cleaned using regular dish washing liquid, hot water, a SOS type pad, cool water and a heavy towel to dry it. You simply make a mixture of hot soapy water and gently scrub away. Then with a garden hose or using a bucket full of clean, cool water rise it away. Then either let air dry or take a heavy towel and dry it off.
Unpainted aluminum can pose a problem. While rust free, they suffer from oxidization. You’ll need to avoid using harsh chemicals like bleach and ammonia. If you do run into oxidization, you can attempt to remove it by using four parts of water to one part of vinegar. Mix well and use a rag or cloth to wipe the furniture down. If you have sturdy, hard plastic outdoor furniture and it is quite filthy and has not had a good cleaning in a long time, you can use a pressure washer to clean it off. If you have cushions for your patio furniture, see if they are safe to put in your washer and air dry. If not, use a mild detergent put some in a bucket and use hot soapy water to clean really well. Then rinse and air dry.
Patio umbrellas are a safe haven for mildew, germs and muck. Start with a bucket of hot soapy water, an old rag and scrub well. Rinse well with a garden hose and leave open to air dry. Use a towel to spot dry the umbrella. Don’t fold or close the umbrella to store until it is completely dry or you will be in for a nasty surprise when you reopen it weeks or months later. If the patio umbrella is being stubborn try using a automotive vinyl top cleaner-the kind that is used on convertibles. One great thing to add to the add to the hot soapy water is to add several heaping tablespoons of baking soda. It will act as a safe, natural abrasive and whitener. Let the baking soda/soapy solution set on the furniture for 10-15 minutes before rinsing it off well.
For the toughest spots on wicker or plastic furniture you can use a synthetic brittle brush instead of a SOS type scrubbing bad to gently scrub the away the dirt and grime. Before putting away your patio furniture for the winter, make sure it is clean and dry or you’ll find grime and mildew all over your nice patio furniture.
